North Vancouver Conservatives: Advertising Begins

Just when you thought Wendy Qureshi had a lock on political advertising here on the North Shore, up steps North Vancouver Conservative Candidate Andrew Saxton. In today's North Shore News the local Tories have taken out a quarter page Ad on page seven bearing the headline:

"SAXTON: CONSERVATIVES KEEPING COMMUNITIES SAFE"

However, apart from the well positioned photograph of Saxton discussing "North Shore community safety with a concerned North Vancouver senior citizen", there isn't much in the ad that speaks directly to any specific local issues.

The text of the Ad includes:

"By introducing legislation requiring mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes, and tougher sentences for violent repeat offenders, our government has shown that we are willing to stand up and be strong when dealing with serious offenders."

"Defending victims and creating safer communities has been a top priority of this government."

It was funny to hear the response from the Canadian Bar Association last week in response to the Conservatives proposed minimum sentences. They are against the changes because mandatory minimums hamper 'judicial discretion'.

Everytime a judge hands out a weak sentence and the public criticizes 'judicial discretion' the Canadian Bar Association defends the Judge by saying "its not the judges fault, if the public wants stiffer sentences that is up to the legislators."

Be careful what you wish for Judges.

George Pringle on the previous post says comments are not important. Without comments and debate this blog will fail and it is failing miserably of late.

Ernie and John have posting rights... get one of them to post a comments section right after Georgie. Then DG and SC can go postal on him whenever they please.

Since I am not allowed to comment on George's last post, What?

"I have the answer on how to prevent my internet stalker Dave Gosse and now Sue Cook who is now copying his tactics."

Please elaborate.

Andrew is doind a good job of getting out in the community, but I think Bell's name recognition is insurmountable even though he hasn't been able to deliver as a back bench opposition MP.

Anon 3:21- that "insumountable name recognition" works both ways. That's why I will give Saxton a chance.

What I've seen from Bell as Mayor and as a Liberal are indeed insurmountable obstacles for me voting for him.

Certain people on the North Shore are pointing out the failings, year after year, of former DNV Mayor Don Bell. I speak to the issue of the Capilano Suspension Bridge fiasco.

"It is a lengthy process, one which CSB (Capilano Suspension Bridge) ignored when it developed its above ground walkway on the west side of their property in 2004, despite repeated warnings from district staff. In the end, council retroactively granted the appropriate permits..."

And certain people call the CSB "responsible corporate citizens?"

And this is our DNV Council HOPING TO SET AN EXAMPLE! And this is our MP, Don Bell, showing his true colours when supposedly acting in the best interests of DNV residents when he was the Mayor of the District of North Vancouver.

I voted for Cindy Silver.

I agree - if George limits discussion I think he is missing the point of this "new media" - however, as a main poster that is his choice.

As the main poster of this particular post I have the right to delete comments but choose not to. (unless of course they cross the line)

Note that I respect Saxton's effort to get his name out in the community. My only suggestion is that he talk specifically about federal issues impact on North Vancouver. Simply regurgitating Stephen Harper/Party produced info falls short of getting through to me.

I've been very impressed with the advertising from Wendy Quereshi, Ernie Crist and John Sharp. That's called putting your money where your mouth is, and they're doing it.

As for Saxton, I think he can campaign on law and order in North Van, but he needs to add a local twist, like Barry suggested.

The Lower Lonsdale Sovereignity Society said...

The Lower Lonsdale Sovereign Society (LLSS) is devoted to removing Lower Lonsdale from the City of North Vancouver's tyrannical grip.

For years, Lower Lonsdale has been neglected and abused at the hands of its political masters up the hill on Lonsdale.

Case in point: skyrocketing property taxes for Lower Lonsdale residents to pay for the Shangri-La Library in Central Lonsdale, which will primarily be utilized by the Central and Upper Lonsdale creme-de-la-creme.

After removing itself from the iron grip of the CNV, the Lower Lonsdale Sovereignity Society is encouraging annexation of LoLo by the City of Vancouver.

The LLSS has received encouraging words on this matter from individuals of influence within the City of Vancouver.

Wendy Qureshi said...

What is missing again about the scenario of Lower Lonsdale, is that the CNV has purposely let the area deteriorate, not looked after crime and drug dealings and homelessness, and then uses this as "reasons" for "densification and development."
More and more homeless. As Carole James pointed out today, homelessness costs our society too much.

Yes! Let's not forget that this is a democracy and you can't criticize when people like Saxton try to get involved. Criticize the ideas not the man.
Also, excellent suggestion, North Vancouver needs more representation in Ottawa and the people of North Vancouver might pay attention more if they had a clue about how Harper policies affect out city/region.

What I found interesting was the column on Blair Wilson in today's NSN where they gave all the Liberal MPs Wilson beat out for the role of BC Liberal caucus chair.

Among the ones Wilson beat out was our own Don Bell who inarguably would have been a better chair than Wilson.

I'll safely bet money that I know which of the two Dion wishes he had as his BC caucus chair now!

Right Lyle, Don Bell, because he is ineffective and doesn't cause any trouble. He also doesn't have any ideas or do anything positive for our society. He is a nobody.

Lyle Craver said...

I'm playing devil's advocate here since I am reasonably sure Dion would much prefer ANYBODY (well almost) as his BC Caucus chair rather than Blair Wilson right now.

Anonymous said...

You're right about that. But I don't think all the info is out about Blair Wilson. Nasty family stuff comes out.

One shouldn't be surprised Saxton is campaigning on the law & order theme - this is official Conservative party policy that would almost certainly go forward in a majority government situation but is difficult to advance in a minority government.

I'm chiefly surprised anyone is surprised Mr. Saxton advocates his party's policy! Why would you expect him to advocate anything else?

I think the poster's point is that Saxton is not providing any real information regarding the local aspects of the law and order issue. It seems logical that you'd want to talk to your community instead of talk at them, but Harper's Conservatives aren't about engaging discussions, they have a script and stick with it (just ask Michael Chong, Casey, Wagner etc). It'll be interesting to see if the CON show continues to be dodge and weave when it comes to accountability, as opposed to their favourite 'Look, they did it too!' response.
