Housing Crunch is Worst in B.C.

I have sent this letter off to the Province newspaper regarding their story today. Ernie Crist and I crafted this letter.

"According to the U.S. public policy firm Demographia, high housing prices exist because urban planners and governments limit urban sprawl.

This is a gross over-simplification and sends a backwards message.

In our opinion regional planning -- if not provincial planning, must be implemented.

The Agricultural Land Reserve must be maintained. It is the LUNGS of the region.

Above all, public transportation must be made accessible and affordable before development takes place and that development should be done along these public transportation corridors."

Wendy - if you are going to continue to blog please at least stick to salient ideas, we are surrounded by forests, just ask harris, half of them are in her front yard.

Your time would be better spent going throught the garbage of the current councillors that claim to be environmentalists and exposing the fact that they do not practice the 4 r's, her old volvo probably has not had a tune up in years cause last time i saw it it was beltching black smoke, course she does not spend time at the drive thrus so not to worry.

Clean up our back yard before you start on others.

Act local think global is the first steps you can take to clean u p the environment.

An adoring admirer.

Ah yes - the Gummint knows best. We need more Gummint, bigger Gummint and Gummint needs to be way more involved in everything I do.

no thanks...

What's a gummint?

Gummint is something that people say when they can't say "government" very well... It's a joke, get it?

As for the tenor of the article in the newspaper, I was tempted to give the guy my two cents' worth. What would you rather have difficulty finding -- food or a condo? It's more than a bit self-serving.

Wendy Qureshi said...

You people have missed the whole point...as usual.
Good night!

As Ernie always says, "The struggle continues."

And you commenters, as usual, don't have a clue about the issues.

Maybe she will stop using this blog, we can only hope!

Why, Wendy, do you think that -

What would you rather have difficulty finding -- food or a condo? It's more than a bit self-serving.

- is missing the point. I would think that this is the essence of the original article. The builder wants to build things at the expense of the ALR which is producing food.

Who's really missing the point or doesn't have a clue?

Does North Van have any ALR land?

Anonymous said...

Come to think of it...no....

Anonymous said...

Once again, Wendy has proven herself to be completely irrelevant.

Next topic.

Anonymous said...

What is your point, Wendy? I am sure Ernie isn't helping you write these things.

Wendy Qureshi said...

It is unfortunate that there is so much apathy and lack of understanding in our society. The previous comments emulate this.

The ALR is NOT producing food. It is producing oxygen.

I just returned from the Crist residence and he is onboard...again.

Paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Anonymous said...

No, you don't even understand what you write.

There is no ALR land in North Vancouver, you have no point.

Move to Delta where that is an issue.

Wendy Qureshi said...

People are dying of cancer, check out the OBITs. I doubt that any one of you bloggers hasn't been hit by this fact.

Modern community planning is being exploited by corrupt politicians in bed with developers. Make money! At the expense of we regular people.

The crap that is given us, like the Hynes proposal in Seylynn, is that it is "sustainable" and if you check out Justin Beddall's interview with DNV Mayor Richard Walton in today's North Shore Outlook, you would almost believe it...if you are a moron.

John Sharpe said...

Absolutely agree that the ALR is the LUNGS of the region. We must be leaving a legacy for our children. We must be thinking of their future.

It's not 'all about North Van.'
And what affects the ALR will affect us here. The atmosphere knows no borders.

Anyway, to think that real estate costs will come down by developing the ALR is akin to thinking that by twinning the Port Mann you will solve traffic congestion. In 5 years time the price of real estate will still be higher and the highway will be full of cars again.

Lungs, Agriculture land Reserve are the lungs......of the region?

Somebody around here needs to be given an anatomy lesson, or at very least leave this blog site and take a tour on Google Earth.
You'll find that the ALR are but dotted specks when you are 25 miles up while looking down on Metro Vancouver. Try zooming out to 140 miles and you'll discover what is really keeping us breathing.

Anonymous said...

If you want to do something for the ALR in other places, run for MLA, it's in their jurisdiction.

If you're just addicted to ranting, keep on trucking on the road to pointlessness.

John Sharpe said...

Pointlessness, huh? But specs, huh? So it's wrong to look out for our future generations? You don't even want to give it the benefit of the doubt? The last time I checked we do have air qualty problems in the lower mainland, and you don't think it matters?

Barry,

You have a great blog here if it weren't for the mean spirited anonymous bloggers whose only purpose is to make themselves right.

People could be a tad concerned if anything happened to both the bridges and food would no longer be delivered to the North Shore.

Smart planning would to make sure that every community is independent on the main sourcs of life - food, water and shelter.

No source of NS grown food, homes to expensive to buy, and air filled with pollution.

Boy are we doing well or what

Terrorists hitting both bridges and mining the harbours of the whole North Shore?

Gee, John some of the posters can prove the content of their opinions and they are right!!!???

Whoa - what the heck is going on?

So much better to throw out half baked ideas based on unfounded left leaning ideology and bias.

Mayor Richard Walton is an hypocrite. He talks about "sustainability" and at the same time votes for developments like "Whiteley Court" and endorses the highrises in Lynn Valley.

More cars and more pollution without any consideration to current residents.

The hoax of getting rid of the parking lot in Lynn Valley at the expense of having 2000 more parking stalls is ridiculous and totally against green condideration.

Sue Cook said...

8:20 - no one said terrorists - but who knows. There could also be an earthquake, major traffic accident or incident on each of the bridges - you have no idea what the future holds.

The fact is we are stupid enough to not even be able to access food in our own community.

So Whiteley Court would have been more sustainable with million dollar townhomes replacing the existing dwelling units there? It's likely no one buys that logic. Apart from secondary suites, when's the last time a new rental apartment unit was built on the North Shore? The Whiteley Court proposal was approved in accordance with the Lynn Valley Plan and includes this type of needed accommodation.

Sue Cook said...

The rental stock is taking a steady erosion in the City. I am going to ask the City how many buildings have asked for permits to be converted to ownership in the last year and how many new rental units have been built.

I said 2 years ago that poverty was being created by the politicians and developers and my words are proving to be correct.

I also plan to get a list of the developers as I am interested in seeing if the same names come up, etc. It will be interesting to track the election and see to whom those dollars go to in the November election.

Restrictions on condominium conversions are referenced in 1979 and 1992.

Sue, are you looking for another $400 confrontation with Richard White?

DIY by going to CNV's website on Building Permit Statistical Reports

There's an application coming up tonight Feb 4th at NVC Council for the conversion of the good looking apt building at 13th and Chesterfield

Anonymous said...

Conversion to what? Strata title units or rebuilding higher and denser?

Anonymous said...

It was a delegation to Council not an application...and the purpose of the delegation was to discuss how to use density transfers to preserve rental housing stock. Sounds like a good place to start.

It was a delegation and then an application.
