James Ridge appointed VP, Enrollment/Services/Registrar at UBC

Career public servant to become UBC's next Registrar.

A career public servant has been appointed Associate Vice President, Enrollment Services/Registrar at the University of British Columbia.

James Ridge, Deputy City Manager at the City of Vancouver, will assume responsibilities for UBC student recruitment, admissions, financial assistance and other operational matters as well as serving as Secretary of the UBC Senate as mandated by the University Act.

"James Ridge brings a wealth of public sector knowledge and senior management experience to the university," said UBC President Stephen Toope, "and I believe his contributions to enhancing the UBC student experience will be substantial."

Ridge's public sector career began in 1982 with an eight-year stint in the Canadian Forces, where he attained the rank of Major. He became director of the Crime Control Commission of Ontario before taking on a series of licensing and planning positions with the City of Toronto, where he played a key role in municipal amalgamation, culminating in 2001 when he became CIO/Director of Information Technology. Prior to joining the City of Vancouver, Ridge was Chief Administrative Officer of the District of North Vancouver.

"His record of achieving outstanding team effectiveness and service is superbly fitted to building on current strengths and acting on the recommendations of Enrollment Services reviews at the Okanagan and Vancouver campuses," said Brian Sullivan, Vice President, Students, to whom Ridge reports.

"I am delighted for this unexpected opportunity and enthusiastic about doing my part to help UBC achieve its vision, particularly related to student success," Ridge said. "I know there will be lots to learn and I am grateful to be joining an accomplished team."
Ridge, who succeeds Brian Silzer, AVP and Registrar since 2002, will assume his duties on June 8.

It's blog-worthy because I deemed it to be so. When and if you decide to write under your own name instead of Anonymous, you will be in a position to make this decision! Ciao.

And you are so wrong about Carole James ... I used to speak to her at least once a week when I worked at the B.C. Teachers' Federation. She is a good woman, however her knowledge of money-management simply will not pay for her socialist ideology.

Anon. 12:31 AM. The heading means that Anon. commented on my post and requested of Barry that it be made its own separate post. Since I have spoken with Barry lately and he told me he is very busy, and since I knew this information to be fact because I watched it on Global News, I trusted the Anon. and posted it under my name. I thought this was clear English.

Of course the subsequent career of James Ridge is of interest to the blog.

During his time at DNV he was certainly an important player in affairs at the Hall.

I was NOT a fan of the man at DNV since I believe setting policy is primarily the role of Council and Staff to carry it out but I _certainly_ wish him well as I always did on a personal level.

(Now all that's subject to change if my daughter who is going to UBC in September comes home in tears about the Registrar's office but we'll cross that bridge if and when!)

It's undoubtedly a matter of style but I prefer the current CAO. Now if only he would project his voice better at Council!

I wonder if the handling of the Blueridge mudslide will come back to laser him in the ass. Don't forget, there will be a post soon with Michael Kuttner. I missed his call yesterday, however it will be posted soon. And also don't forget Janice Harris's lack of leadership regarding this issue. Oh...sorry...I forgot, Janice doesn't give a whit about issues.

James Ridge looked at me straight in the eyes and lied to me! I do not like that! I hope he doesn't have too much power at UBC. If he does he will screw people around for awhile and then they will figure him out...I hope.

Anonymous said...

I'm sure he's shaking in disbelief, too, Wendy, that you would dare to hold him accountable.

There were numerous positive comments regarding Mr. Ridge that have all be deleted. Only the negative comments remain.

Those that have made those comments don't begin to measure up to a man of James Ridges' professionalism and capabilities.

Congratulations and good luck James.

Anonymous said...

Who the hell deleted all the comments?

Wendy? If it wasn't you - go back through the log and tell us who did it.

Anonymous said...

Maybe it was James Ridge?

Wendy, you have been deleting posts inappropriately. If you want this blog and yourself to retain any credibility, you should restore them.

I popped in to have a look at the blog...not surprisingly a bit moribund in Barry's absence...but I did get a laugh looking at the posts on this topic or rather the pattern of the posts: WQ, Deleted, Deleted,Deleted, WQ, WQ, Deleted, Deleted, Deleted, Deleted, Deleted, Deleted,WQ,LC, Deleted, Deleted, WQ, Deleted, WQ, Deleted, WQ, Deleted....

I recall that some of those now 'Deleted' were positive of James...leaving one to assume that only one point of view can be expressed.

James Ridge brought a professionalism and polish to the position that had been sorely lacking for many years. From day 1, he was being sought by others and it is of no surprise that he has moved as he has. Like any senior administrator, he was careful and cautious and may not have been to everyone's liking but I enjoyed the few times we had the opportunity to deal with him at the DNV. I wish him good luck in this new venture.

Wendy has decided that she doesn't like anonymous posters on her posts. Since you put your name on Vince, yours will likely stay, but this anonymous, yet constructive note, will suspiciously disappear...

Always interesting to read the views of interested onlookers that have never seen the performance of council or senior staff inside closed door "in camera" meetings - especially the derrogatory opinions.

Possibly the experience for the observer differs from that of the insider.

Bloggers, I did not delete any of these comments. They were deleted by "the author" not me. If and when I delete comments on my posts, they would be referred to as "deleted by a blog administrator." Unless I wrote them.

I have no idea why they were deleted.

And Vincent, you are INCORRECT!

Ernie Crist always told me that people will try to do anything possible to divert the public from the real issues. This certainly is happening here.

What about James Ridge?

Testing.

Anonymous said...

Wendy, the above post was me, an anonymous poster, testing to see if I could edit or delete my post. I could not. It appears that anonymous posters are unable to edit or delete their posts after they have been made. All of the deleted posts were, if not mistaken, made by anonymous posters. So your explanation is incorrect, to use your favorite word. I know for a fact that you have deleted my posts in your threads and suspect that you are behind these deletions as well. This is no way to behave when you encounter people who do not agree with you. Your credibility has flown right out the window.

Anonymous said...

Wendy - nice try. Those deleted posts used to say "deleted by a blog administrator", now they say "deleted by the author".

Next time you try this, you may want to remember that most of those posts were by anonymous, and anonymous can not delete posts, therefore they could not have been deleted by "the author"

Censorship? C'mon Wendy, that's low... Barry? you going to allow this? If so,I'm gone.

Wendy Qureshi said...

You people are nuts. Check it with Barry if you don't believe me.

Ernie Crist always said to me,"They will attack you forever if they feel threatened."

You must be threatened, because I did not delete your comments.

Barry Forward will prove this.

Anonymous said...

Wendy, you started this post and are the only one who can edit posts made by anonymous posters. Those of us who post as anonymous cannot edit or delete our posts. Log out of your Blogger account and write a post as anonymous. Then, as anonymous, try to edit or delete that post. You will not be able to and will see that what we say is true. Oh, and forget the 'Ernie Crist said' comments. It gets tiresome.

I'd also like Barry to comment on the censorship that is going on here. If Wendy is deleting people's comments only for the reason that she disagrees with them, then maybe Barry should remove her posting privileges for a while. The power seems to have gone to her head.

Anonymous said...

Wendy, I am the author of one of those deleted comments. I did not delete my comment, so who did? Barry should delete Wendy for undemocratic censorship.

Anonymous said...

I am also someone whos post was deleted and not by me. I wondered were it had gone as it was not offence or rude or anything of that nature. All I said was I liked James Ridge while he was at DNV. Now I see that many others were deleted as well.

Barry what the heck is going on here??

Folks, I DID NOT DELETE YOUR COMMENTS.

Why doesn't somebody else post? The DNV approval of the Marine Drive development deserves a post.

Wendy, I suggest you change your Google login password. One explanation for what happened is that someone has deduced your password and used it to delete the posts.

I'd sure like to see some discussion about the big variance for parking given on this. Big mistake by council, and since they seem bound to replicate the decision all along Marine Drive, we're going to have a big problem in a very few years. Good on Mike Little and Roger Bassam for trying to stand up and do the right thing.

Anonymous said...

Which development are you referring to?

Anonymous said...

My guess is a re-development of the property immediately west of Lloyd Avenue on the north side of marine drive. On the corner is a Bank of Montreal branch, and next to that, a (former?) car dealership I believe.
