North Vancouver City council censures Mayor
A week ago City Mayor makes comments towards the Chamber about the 'restructuring' deemed "inappropriate to the office of the mayor"- Clr. Guy Heywood". Majority of council also not onside.
Mike Farnworth just stepped down as BCNDP leadership candidate and endorsed John Horgan. Keith Baldrey figures no one else will run. Perhaps Darrell Mussatto should think about it.
Who else is he going to endorse? Can't believe no one else is stepping forward. The Liberals have too much power, we need an opposition that's truly effective, but no one seems to be interested. We might as well be a one party rule Province.
I am not sure why Clr. Heywood is afraid of discussing amalgamation! This is a very good idea and financially beneficial for the residents of both municipalities…
"I've always been opposed to amalgamation. I am opposed to amalgamation and I'll continue to stand up for the citizens and businesses in our community and for their best financial interests," he said. "Amalgamation has not worked. It's been a disaster in almost every other area where municipalities have done it and I will stand up for residents." -Mayor Mussatto North Shore News, April 2, 2014.
Although the above quote is a tad non-specific, Mayor Mussatto has maintained that amalgamation would not benefit NVC taxpayers. In other words, The DNV's purse is not as sound as the City's. I believe that has been his basic reasoning.
The old saw that City taxes are lower than Dist taxes is now not true. Dist residents pay lower taxes than the City.
Factor in savings by retiring redundant senior staff, closing one City Hall, economies of scale in purchasing, seamless planning for transit and development, one set of Bylaws and associated administrative policies and procedures and it becomes a bit of a no-brainer.
Mussatto's opposition just smells like self-interest.
The restructure motion was only that - a motion for a study of pros and cons. How could anyone argue against that? Also linked to this story is Keating's 'wtf' tweeting during discussion at the meeting. Shameful behaviour on the part of both of them. Past time for a big change.
Most concerning is that the Mayor has demonstrated no regret, he seems to have no idea that the wise thing would have been to show some remorse, instead of trying to defend the indefensible.
Just one more example of poor judgment. Has too much on the gravy train affected his moral compass?

Of course Mussatto is opposed to amalgamation - where else could you get all the perks of being the Mayor of a tiny place only 5 sq. miles in size?
In any case the excerpts of letter to the Chamber boarder on bullying and are unworthy of a person in the position of Mayor. He was rightly censured.
