It's still on the steep side of the learning curve, but all in all people are handling the shift to separating food waste pretty well.
Kudos to the District recycling program people for providing workshops and support - it really helped.
We're now looking forward to the eventual drop in the amount of trash we generate, and the hoped for decrease in what we pay the District to empty the garbage bins every week.
And, as a group that already filled the blue carts with bottles and paper to overflowing every week, we're pretty pleased to be doing one more thing to reduce what goes to the landfill.
As someone who is old enough to remember when "recycling" was limited to kids picking up pop bottles along the road, and cashing them in at the corner store for candy, I'm pretty amazed at the recycling that's now normal.
Just once, we can all be pretty pleased - this is a program, run by government, that's not only good for us, it's successful!
And oh yeah - how about that new Alberta government?

I was just wondering what will cause a decrease in the amount of trash generated.?
I think in that context, "trash" means stuff that goes to the landfill.

You mean a drop in stuff that goes to the mine, thereby reducitng the average level of precious materials in the ore concentrate.

The North Shore Emergency Management Officer, Mike Andrews, hasn't even updated their WEBSITE.
Not a whisper, not even a Contact number for the Public if they want to help, assist, donate to the 26 families.
Having a date marked on the calendar for a once a year preparedness
in case of an earthquake is fine, but what about dropping the mock drills run by NSEMO and go the extra mile by helping the community to know HOW to gain help, and more importantly, HOW to help others as in the case of the housing complex fire.
When the big one comes, will there be a Mike Andrews helping one, or none?

In Surrey, they will be converting the organics waste into biofuel, in order to run the trucks that are sent to collect the organic waste.
In order to create biofuels and make it less flammable, a lot of toxic chemicals will be added to the brew.
Doesn't anyone else see the irony in this?
I think it is too much for the strata councils to look after this. Most of them don't know what they're doing. In my complex there is one green bin for 64 units which is emptied twice a week. And, there are many plastic bags in there. I just dump the organics out of the plastic bag and put it into the garbage. Is this what I am supposed to be doing? And what about plastic and paper that houses ground beef, for example. Are we supposed to separate the paper from the plastic (difficult to do) and put the paper in the green bin and the plastic in the garbage? I don't think it's reasonable to expect people to do this.
If you don't understand how recycling works, just give the DNV or CNV a call and I think they will arrange to have a member of staff come to your complex to give a presentation to any and all occupants who need clarification on the process.

Have you even asked? Or are you just making assumptions?
I would rather not have politicians out front on a personal disaster such as the fire. They should be helping where they can, but the public spotlight should go to the on-the-ground responders and the planners that prepare for the next event.
And yes, I did volunteer to help last Thursday, and there was a politician helping out behind the scenes with many of the other neighbors.

All this controlling recycling makes as much sense as the Surrey's plan for turning their organics collection into biofuel, in order to fuel those very trucks used to pick your organics. Which is worse: "Organics" in our landfills, or those same organics being treated with a number of toxic chemicals, turning them into biofuels? Tough question!...hmmmm?
In the UK, there are places that have forced nine recycling boxes onto people living in small homes, who have to fill with the proper recyclables in the proper boxes, and find room to store these nine boxes somewhere inside their homes.
In the meantime, what do I do with all my old "wrong-sized" garbage cans and blue boxes, etc, every time the "rules and regs" change at Metro's whim and wile? Toss them into the landfill, now? It is complete insanity, all this recycling, and regulations around our trash. Dumb and dumber!
Just burn it and turn it into clean energy, like Sweden does! There is no green in this "green can" program. It has more to do with lording power and control over us.
