Lies, Damn Lies & Statistics

There are those parading around in this City election campaign quoting growth in our City is 1%.
This, they claim, is within the parameters of our Official Community Plan & therfore to be praised & readily accepted. No problem accepting growth at this rate ... all is well.

Not so ... check out this link ...
http://www.bcstats.gov.bc.ca/data/pop/pop/estspop.asp#totpop

Here's some more interesting information.
Top Ten Growth Municipalities: 2009-2010 by percentage
1. Langford 6.6%
2. NORTH VANCOUVER CITY 3.6%
3. Surrey 3.4%
4. New Westminster 2.8%
5. Coquitlam 2.6%
6. Vancouver 2.3%
7. Chilliwack 2.3%
8. Burnaby 1.9%
9. North Vancouver District 1.8%
10. Richmond 1.7%

May I also point out that on page 7 of the 2010 Sub-Provincial Population Estimates, North Vancouver City had growth of 3.6% in 2009-2010 and 2.4% in 2008-2009. Wow, more than 3 times what we were told. This growth rate is not sustainable. The Density Genie is just about out of the bottle ... once out the Genie will not go back in. I am all about telling the public the truth & respecting our OCP.

What kind of North Vancouver City do you want to live in?

Councillor Clark, did you not just reverse your vote and thereby legalize two illegal fourplexes, with a justification that they were needed for affordable housing? So, what, you are a fierce opponent of increased density ... unless it is illegal?

Anonymous said...

Thanks Rod, the numbers are very interesting. Delta, for example, let 8 people in last year (0% growth) to bring their total population to exactly 100,000. That is great number - they should stop right there...

Seriously though, in the City of NVan probably 500 of those new people (1%) live around the waterfront, having paid for all the Pier and other improvements down there. They are all (I hope) taking the Seabus back and forth to work and supporting our local merchants with their money.

Another 1% live at or around the Vista and they effectively bought us a new library.

If the community can obtain a real tangible benefit and the infrastructure can support it, then why not trade a bit of airspace for real hard community assets. Provided, of course, there is a smart, vigilant Council making sure that the people who live here now can benefit from the community assets that are created.

Anonymous @6:18pm brings up a good point. On October 17, Clark said that Mr. Wallner had been "duplicit in the lack of enforcement and paying due to the BC Building Code", that he was a "lousy landlord", and that any evictions would be "regrettable, but the City is not at fault, Mr. Wallner is". Clark had similar opinions for all the times this had been before council in the years previously. What changed in the three weeks between October 17th and November 7th?

So Clark swayed once
Musatto, Keating are
yay never a nay on any development
issue or landlord issue at City
Council, Trentadue is included but
is not running

I prefer a 1 to 2 per cent growth rate
Thanks for the facts Rod

WHEN IS BILL BELL GOING TO POST HIS ELECTION COLUMN???

Anonymous said...

Why lie about density increases ? What is the point ?

Why hide the fact that four candidates are being well funded by developers ?

Why are the four hiding the fact that they are working closely together at the same time denying they are a slate ?

Why is a senior employee in the School Board office supporting one of these candidates at the same time trying to get her son in ?

Why some knew the Lucas Centre was closing down before the vote even took place to do so ?

Reason for all this deception ?

Money and power.

That is why the truth is being kept from you.

Who is on this slate besides

Mussatto and Keating??

Interesting article on mid-rise development in today's G&M. Is this the future face of Lonsdale?
We can see the effect in the new school admin building. Granted, it's pulled back and softened by the chestnut trees. But we will soon see an office-retail building of similar height at 18th and Lonsdale where Yaas Bazar now stands.

The question is where is the increase of the city population coming from? Are they young families, are they adult children leaving the nest of parents living in the City who can now afford to buy homes here?
Are they retired seniors and if so are they only the really wealthy seniors?
Are they mainly the highly paid union members, executives of large businesses, the people who work in the service industries, gang leaders?
Some one has big big pockets to keep moving to the North Vancouvers who the heck is it?

Throughout the campaign Mussatto has been promoting Keating, Buchanan, and Leia. With these four elected he will have control of council.
When asked at a recent AC for a simple yes or no response to the question "Are you running on the Mayor's slate?", Lei was evasive. Rather than yes or no, as the case may be, she responded, "What's a slate? Define slate."

Wrong answer for someone who is claiming to be independent. Buchanan's response was "The same." She didn't even rise to respond for herself.

From today's Georgia Straight:

If the citizens grant no party full control over Vancouver council and park board, it will jack up the odds of the public having more say in the future.

The aim should not be to make the Mayor's life easier by granting him a majority, but to ensure all voices in the community are heard.

It takes patience and skill and a willingness to compromise to create concensus. Yes, we do need positive, respectful and fair leadership.

Excerpt from the Capilano Courier by Claire Vulliamy:

Ron Polly

Ron Polly, who is running for mayor, has lived in North Vancouver his entire life. He has four dogs, and is a strong supporter of animal welfare.

Polly takes task with the way real estate development happens on the North Shore, saying, “What I would like to see is more amenities before we put in population. We always put the cart in front of the horse. We put in a project, and then we go, ‘Oh gee, we have to put in a playground now’.”

He says that campaign contributions play a large part, pointing out that a sizable portion of Mussato’s donors are part of the development community. Therefore, “when they [developers] come for a project … they don’t put in enough for amenities, so we have to catch it later on.” Ron Polly says that he “will not take a contribution from anyone who will profit from a decision if I’m in office.”

“There’s a move to put a slate on our council … to have people who are going to vote the same way for the next three years.” Ron Polly says while it happens in Vancouver, “that does not work in local politics. It should be seven individuals, all with their own talents working for the best of the community.”

Polly highlights the importance of voting. He says that if everyone at Capilano University “pledged that they were going to go out and vote … they would change the elections on the North Shore.”

Furthermore, he says, it would give more power to the student voice. “It would make everyone stand up and look … The people who contribute to these politicians would fall by the wayside, they’d give their money, but they wouldn’t control the elections.”

He concludes, “The only way we’re going to get that is if people vote.”

The statements above about slates are wrong. They are endorsements in in most cases and the Coalition of Community Associations being non-partisan has not even made an endorsement.

There is only one unofficial party running and that is:

Darrel Mussato

Linda Buchanan
Juliana Buitenhuis
Craig Keating
Cheryl Leia

Even in their case, they have yet to put out the joint leaflets or joint ads they did last time. Of course, there may be a big joint ad tomorrow in the North Shore News.

Well apparently as all this dialgue shows: I am the independent non-slate candidate you should vote in as Mayor. I am not backed nor particularily support any of these candidates except any person with a good business sense, an attitude for the people, and the good sense to put your ideas on the table.

I have not posted signage as it all goes in the garbage anyway at election end... it is an eye sore.

I have not taken donations although if some one were willing to help out I would ask why?

As for demographics let's look closer at the numbers shall we:

Since 2002 - 2011 Sept.
DNV Residential $ on Permits
= 760,974,000 for 2110 Units
(300+) yrs 2002, 2007, 2010, 2011

CNV Residential $ on Permits
= 718,505,000 for 3942 Units
(300+) yrs 2003-05,07-08,10-11
(Two yrs over 600 units 04 and 08)

WVan For Camparison/Affordability
= 1,477,635,000 for 1599 Units
Average approx. 150 per year steady

Ratio of NV Total versus WV
5842/1599 = 3.6535 Units
(718+760)/1477 = 1.0012 $ Permitted

Chris - can you take off your double comment and fix your spelling? A Mayor should know how to spell.

Chris Nichols said...

Now if we look at those numbers first is the fact that in 10 years we have added to North Vancouver as a whole 5842 units if we assume 2.5 per unit to be conservative thatt means we have a growth of 14605 people or 1460 per year.
1460/80000 = 1.825%
But

NVD 2265 *2.5 = 5662 @ 10yrs
CNV 3577 *2.5 = 8942 @ 10yrs

The problem here is that the HJC, and just about every other school and fitness centre in the whole of North Vancouver are how old? 30? 40? 50? Years.

They were out dated 20 years ago.
Line ups have been building up for years.

I crunched a few more numbers for you. Health Services 2008-2010
North Vancouver Health went from 136k to 141k an increase of 4.11%

North Vancouver School District
2008 = 136,246 Same as health
2011 = 142,929 Increase 4.905%

Estimate in 2017 = 151,213
Increase of 5.796% yet we are closing schools and selling off properties to development of what? More residential spaces.

Where do we want to work?
Where do we want to shop?
How are we going to get there?

Some of you talk of these issues but I don't hear any solutions just complaints, let's hear some good solid ideas and solutions we can handle.

Anonymous said...

You have to give us your solutions not just a bunch of unreadable math.

You are trying to be another Darrell, I think I will stay with my vote with the real one.

The Georgia Straight slate

"We're recommending the reelection of Mayor Darrell Mussatto, who is one of the greenest politicians in the region, along with his most important supporters on council, Craig Keating. Newcomers Juliana Buitenhuis, Yashar Khalighi, and Michael Charrois would bring progressive voices to the chamber and are all worth supporting."

Anonymous said...

So vote the Georgia Straight slate if you want to see a continued degradation in services and an increase in wages and benefits for municipal staff?

Anonymous said...

Are they serious? The community would be well served by an antidote to a three person slate (Mussatto, Keating, Leia) composed of: Bookham, Heywood, Bell, and for youth and a new viewpoint, Khalighi. Charrois wants a circus school at Harry Jerome and can't stop talking about the Agricultural Land Reserve, and Buitenhaus wants to give away the City reserves for low income housing. Clark and Fearley: well past their "best before" date...

Anonymous said...

None of the Community Associations are stupid or mentally challenged enough to recommend George Pringle. The Grand Blvd. Association however, is supporting Ron Polly for Mayor to their community members

Anonymous said...

The Grand Blvd Association and all other community associations are not endorsing any one as we are non=partisan.

Anonymous said...

Nonsense, it is easy to see that Pam Bookham who controls the Grand Boulv Assn has endorsed Ron Polly.

INDEPENDENT VOICES said...

Independent Voices has endorsed:

We support the following
INDEPENDENT candidates
for North Vancouver City Council:
Mayor: Ron Polly
Council: Don Bell, Pam Bookham, Rod Clark,
Elizabeth Fodor, Guy Heywood, Amanda Nichol
We believe they best represent the Core Competencies
for Local Government Elected Offi cials.
(ref. Local Government Leadership Academy 10/06)

The Community Associations pretend to be non-partisan but are actively taking sides against Darrell and others.

Ron Polly put an ad in the North Shore News last election pushing a slate of their candidates, even despite the claim of their candidates that they are independents.

Does the provincial election law allow this?

Pam Bookham said...

You have only to look at the voting record to see that the independent candidates voted independently. Through most of this term, one or more of the independents voted with Mussatto, Keating and Trentadue, allowing the Mayor to move his agenda quite successfully. Granted, he had to work a little harder to win that deciding vote, but that's a good thing,in my opinion. It's certainly better than having every vote a forgone conclusion.

Regarding the Community Associations, they are as advertised apolitical. That is not to say that individual members do not weigh in with their preferences, and they have every right to do so. The members of the community associations are as diverse as the city as a whole. They come from all across the city, from Lower Lonsdale and Central Lonsdale (TLCA), from Grand Boulevard-Ridgeway (GBRRA), from Cloverly and Queensbury, from the South Slopes, from the Marine Drive area (Hamilton-Fell), and from the HJ area (CARA). They have made valuable contributions to the City by serving on task forces (the Coach House Task Force and Marine Drive Task Force); they have attended workshops (Keith Road Bicycle Lane), council meetings and public hearings; they've drawn attention to important issues through email and newletter and most recently, they organized a very well-attended All Candidates Meeting at Brooksbank.

They deserve a great deal of credit and much more encouragement and respect for the work they are doing.

Oops. I meant non-partisan not apolitical.
